Here are some helpful facts and tips on caring for your pets dental health.

1) Break out the brush - Brushing your dogs teeth may prove to be a challenge. Use a gentle pet toothbrush and a natural pet toothpaste, most dogs will enjoy the taste of the toothpaste so start by putting a very small amount on your finger and let them taste and or sniff it. They are more likely to let you put the brush in their mouth if they know it tastes good! Always reward your pet after a brushing with a healthy treat, chew or some one on one canine snuggles! If your pet still does not "let" you brush their teeth, try an alternative like Tooth and Gum Wipes by Paul Mitchell. These wipes are great to use on your pet and available at Nauti Paws. So safe you can use them for yourself!

2) We are what we eat - Feeding healthy foods and treats will help keep your pets tarter under control. Many bones and chews can be dangerous to their digestive track and can cause choking. When buying a bone or chew for your dog look for something that is100% digestable, all ntaural, made in the states, and that has a "smell". Many bones are treated with harsh chemicals that remove any natural smells. Giving your dog a dental treat on a regular basis such as Bright Bites will also help control tarter, brighten teeth and freshen their breath. Bright Bites are wheat gluten free and are clinically proven to reduce plaque by 21% and tarter by 65%!They are also approved by the VOCH (veterinary oral health council). You can find these at Nauti Paws as well.

3) Consider scheduling a professional cleaning - If your pet has significant tarter build up you may need to consult with your vet about a proffessional cleaning.  Anesthesia is typically used for this which does come with some risks. There are also options for anesthesia free cleanings that you can also discuss with your vet. Neglecting your dogs dental health can result in problems such as tarter and gingivitis. Tarter and Gingivitis can then lead to gum disease, loss of teeth, and bacterial disease of the heart, liver, and or kidneys.
